An IP Address is a unique identifier of a network destination. A good analogy is a postal address.
IP addresses are unique on a network. Just like an apartment building, there can be multiple subaddresses behind a given IP address.
IP in IP address stands for Internet Protocol. There are currently two versions in use on the Internet.
IPv4 is older. IPv4 addresses take the form of XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX where X can range from 0 to 255.
IPv6 is newer. IPv6 addresses are longer and look like this: 684D:1111:222:3333:4444:5555:6:77.
